Speaking with New and Old Friends and Colleagues

As I travel across the country speaking, conducting seminars, presenting at conferences and consulting. I really enjoy meeting with old friends and making new acquaintances. Here are some stories and pictures of my various travels. If you'd like me to travel to your event or speaking engagement, please let me know. I am happy to do workshops, keynote events, seminars and other speaking engagements.

In the Media

Recently, my work in the area of video games and gadgets for learning has generated interest in the general press. I've appeared on local CBS affiliate, WYOU about video games for learning. Click here to view my television appearance.

I've also been a guest on a local radio talk show called "On the Mark." With Mark Lawrence at WKOK. Click here to read about the appearance.

Also, the local newspaper ran an article on the book, Gadgets, Games and Gizmos for Learning. You can read the article here.

Training Magazine Conference

I presented 3 sessions at the Training Magazine Tech Solutions Conference and Exposition 2007. One on Gadgets, Games and Gizmos, one on Blogs, Wikis and Social Networking and one on Second Life.

TrainingIndustry Award
I was voted one of the Top 20 Most Influential Training Professionals for 2007 ! By Training Industry.com. It is an honor.

Recently Returned from Training Magazine's Training Solutions Conference and Exposition in Colorado
This was a busy conference for me. I was a "Guide on the Side" in the area of making e-learning buying decisions. And gave a presentation on my favorite topic, "Games, Gadgets and Gizmos: Tools for Transferring Knowledge from the Boomers to the Gamers" to a standing room only crowd. You can check out the slides here. I also presented "Creating Effective and Selective E-Learning RFPs." You can get the slide/handout package here.

EduNeering Knowledge Summit in London, England

Karl making a point about learning organisations Tower Bridge The Palace
I delivered the keynote address at this event. It was titled "Becoming a Learning Organisation." I spoke to an international assembly of company thought leaders seeking to understand how to transform their traditional training-based organizations into learning organisations. It was an interactive session with lots of fun and a couple of gadgets thrown in for good luck. I even had time to do a little site seeing as you can tell from a couple of the pictures above.

Project Management at DPW

I recently presented a 2 1/2 day seminar for Staff Development Trainers at the PA Department of Public Welfare. This group of dedicated, hardworking employees are learning project management skills so they can help roll out a new initiative within state welfare offices. Here are a few images. One of the highlights of the event was when we played a jeopardy game to review terminology. It was a lot of fun.

Presenting at the DETC High School Seminar

Keystone National High School hosted a seminar with the Distance Education and Training Council in Bloomsburg in late June. I was fortunate enough to present on the topics of games so...I invited my two most favorite gamers to help me with the presentation. They were fantastic, speaking about and demonstrating Gadgets, Games and Gizmos in a talk titled "Using 'Gaming' as an Instructional Technique." Here are some photographs of the presentation. We are thinking of taking the show on the road. It was well received and the audience had a great deal of fun as did we.

Presenting at the PA-State System of Higher Education Human Resource Conference

I recently presented in my own back yard to a group attending a conference at Bloomsburg University. It was a group of dedicated human resource, labor relations, training, benefits, employment, compensation, payroll and social equity professionals. I spoke on the topic of "Games, Gadgets and Gizmos: How to Better Understand Technology to Reach Training Goals." You can view the slides here. One of the highlights of the presentation for me was that my Gamer 4.0 son co-presented with me. Of course he is an expert on MMORPG games and did a wonderful job explaining them to the audience. He got a round of applause when he was done...he even got a few bits of laughter from some jokes...I hope he doesn't want my job.

Presenting with Kevin Kruse at the Society of Pharmaceutical and Biotech Trainers

Kevin and I presented on the topic of "Evidenced-Based Training." The concept is to use the same empirical rigor for designing instruction as is used for evidenced-based medicine. The presentation was well received and we sparked some additional interest in the topic. The practice of EBT provides great clarity to the difference between “information” and “instruction” and statistically shows how different instructional tactics can lead to significantly better comprehension and retention outcomes. Our workshop reviewed the latest EBT research as well as presented original head-to-head studies conducted exclusively for pharmaceutical sales trainers.

EduNeering Knowledge Summit. I spoke again at the annual EduNeering Knowledge Summit. It was a private event and a lot of fun and great sharing of knowledge, David DeLong, author of "Lost Knowledge" spoe as did Tom Davenport. My topic was "Learning Through Problem-Solving."

Executive Session for the Robert H. Smith School of Business: Leaders for the Digital Economy

I gave a talk titled "Bridging the Boomer/Gamer Knowledge Gap" to a group of about 30 highly interested and enthusiastic managers and executives from Lockheed Martin. The after-dinner talk was lively and fun as we discussed the serious topic of how to transfer knowledge from the Boomers to the Gamers. The talk was part of an on-going Executive Leadership Strategies program sponsored by the Robert H. Smith School of Business. Here are the slides.

ASTD 2006 TechKnowledge

I presented a session titled Clients are From Mars, Vendors are From Venus. It was a panel discussion with John Walsh from Allen Interactions, Kristi Keidel, from Bristol-Myers Squibb and Brian Poland from Wal-Mart and rounding out the panel was Matt Adlai-Gail the Chief Innovation Officer of Eduneering.

PA/DE/NJ Distance Learning Association Meeting

At this meeting, I addressed the issue of the new "gamer" generation entering the workforce and demanding interactive, engaging online activities. The presentation discussed how games and simulations can be used as powerful educational tools to reach students, trainees and others who want to learn in an interactive environment. A demonstration of games developed for a variety of corporations and educational institutions was shown. Unfortunately, I forgot to take pictures. However you can see the slides and a sample game from the presentation.

Rotary International E-Learning Readiness and Needs Assessment Workshop

I recently conducted a three-day workshop to help Rotary International staff trainers determine the best method for conducting an internal e-learning assessment. Rotary International has over 1.2 million members and is one of the largest service organizations in the world. The class was a lot of fun and the training staff from Rotary International is bright and energetic. A great organization and a fun workshop.

Here is the Rotary Team working hard studying the assessment process.

The workshop concluded with a working session on the third day. In the working session, the team developed a plan for conducting the e-learning assessment themselves.

A lively discussion on how to approach the assessment.

Johnson and Johnson Dean's Summit

For the second year in a row, I have been invited to speak at the J&J Dean's Summit. This is a great event where the learning and development leaders within J&J get together to discuss strategy and techniques. It is a time for learning and development professionals within J&J to exchange ideas and to catch up on the latest happenings and technologies from their vendors.

I spoke to a full house of about 70 professionals on the topic of how to bridge the knowledge gap between baby boomers and the gamer generation.

It was a lively discussion with plenty of examples and excellent questions from the J&J professionals.

The summit was completed by an excellent panel of J&J insiders, myself and a professor from another college. Here the panel sits waiting anxiously for our next question.

From Left to Right: Robert Ubell, Dean, School of Professional Education, Stevens Institute of Technology, Allan Weisberg, VP Organizational Capability, Karl Kapp (Me), and Martin Freedman, Director, J&J School of Personal & Professional Development.

VNU Training Conference and Exposition, Long Beach, CA

Here is a picture of me with Donald Kirkpartick, the picture is a little blurry but we had a good time at the conference. He is a great speaker and provided an interesting perspective on evaluation. If you get a chance to attend one of his sessions, I suggest you take the opportunity. He and I met up at the VNU Training Conference in Long Beach, CA.

Also at that conference, I presented in basic games in Clark Aldrich's Games Expo on the exposition floor. Here I am with my friend Clark and another participant Lyn McCall of Will Interactive. They do some neat online simulations. Clark has written two books on e-learning games and simulations and is a leader in the field of e-learning games and simulations.

I was at the conference at Long Beach to discuss one of my favorite topics, writing e-learning proposals and RFPs. Here is a picture taken before my presentation started which explains the lack of people.

ASTD 2005 International Conference

After meeting and discussing various topics with Michael Allen at an e-learning conference earlier in the year, Karl decided to present at the ASTD 2005 conference on the topic of vendor/client relationships (one of his areas of expertise.) He facilitated a panel discussion of two individuals from the client side of the fence and two from the vendor side. It was a lively and enlightening presentation. Look for something similar at ASTD's TechLearn in 2006.

Karl Kapp poses with Michael Allen of Allen Interactions and founder of Macromedia and Authorware, Michael helped to organize Karl's ASTD 2005 presentation titled "Clients are from Mars and Vendors are From Venus."

The panel members were:

  • John Welsh, Allen Interactions (vendor)
  • Audrey Kuna, Get Thinking, Inc. (vendor)
  • Don Bolen, Delta Air Lines (client)
  • Scott Copeland, Booz Allen Hamilton (client)

The presentation can been downloaded here.

EduNeering Knowledge Summit, Summer of 2005

Action shot of Marc Rosenberg and Karl working the crowd at the Eduneering 2005 Knowledge Summit.

Karl teamed up with e-learning expert Marc Rosenberg at the "invitation-only" Eduneering Knowledge Summit which brought together thought leaders and others who shared information about knowledge management, the upcoming gamer generation and how to deal with the mass exodus of boomers and their wealth of knowledge from the workplace.

Marc and Karl answered questions from the audience on the state of e-learning and the future direction of knowledge management within corporations.
