The page contains links to my books, tools I use and books I recommend by other authors. I also have included a section on books that I am reading that are not specifically e-learning or learning related but which fascinate me.
| Step-by-step guide for writing a winning e-learning proposal, samples, examples, advice from myself and other professionals. | Guide for implementing an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) System with a focus on the learning and training aspects of the implementation. |
Recommended Books About Instructional Design and Learning..
Description of the classic step-by-step model of Instructional Design. Complete with plenty of research citations. Describes instructional design using a circular model. This type of model is better for someone who understands ID. Good mini case studies. Contains practice activities. It a classic in the field discussing the fundamentals of the instructional design process. No guess work following this academic model. Written by a number of giants in the field. Covers past and converging trends impacting the field. Good overview of what is happening in terms of ID and technology. Robert Gagne is a pillar of the field. I never found his books simple to read but the concepts he explains are timeless and effective. Another classic by Robert Gagne (if not the classic). Describes different types of information to be learned and how they can be best learned. Work through this book. It is worth it.
Recommended Books About the Boomer/Gamer Knowledge Gap..
Gadgets, Games and Gizmos for Learning: Transferring Know-How from the Boomers to the Gamers.
by Karl M. Kapp
This book describes a study done with over 2500 from the Gamer Generation and describes the traits of gamers. You can get a Paperback Version as well.
This book details very scary statistics about the upcoming exodus of boomers from the current workforce. It will open your eyes about the retiring boomers. Marc Prensky coined the terms "digital immigrant" and "digital native." He continues the discussion in his second book. Marc Prensky's first book. Good overview of the ethos of gamers and why games can work to educate and train. Discussion of how video games are not all bad and how some of what is being learned in those games can be beneficial. Look for this book in April 2007. It provides solutions for bridging the boomer/gamer
knowledge gap.
Recommended Books About E-Learning..
This book sets the stage for understanding how e-learning can positively impact an organization. Good book for understanding e-learning's place in corporations. Marc's second book discusses how organizations can use technology to expand beyond their current mindset and achieve success with various learning interventions. Michael Allen is a pillar in the field, having been involved with e-learning before it was e-learning. Good, fun thoughtful read. This book by Allen takes all the conventional wisdom from the instructional design books lists above and turn it on its head. Thoughtful read with great ideas. This book provides research evidence that can be used to effectively design e-learning. A great reference book for designing e-learning based on research (imagine that). Practical, no-nonsense approach to developing e-learning. Effectively describes solutions that are instructional sound but won't break the bank. Good read.
Roger C. Schank's classic book on technology-enabled learning. He has written dozens of books on learning and technology. What he says in this book is as true today as when he first wrote it. Ok, so not technically just about e-learning, however, this book provides a good discussion of blended learning and how it can be made to work within organizations. Kevin Kruse's book on technology-based training. Good discussion of instructional design and how it relates to e-learning. The book covers a little bit of everything in terms of training with technology. If you need ideas to spark your creativity in terms of online courses, this book can help.
Recommended Books About Games and Simulations...
Clark's second book. It contains a great overview of simulations. Provides a context for discussion of different types of simulations. The casual tone makes it a quick and fun read. Deep dive into the development of the simulation VirtualLeader. Great insights for anyone developing a simualtion or using a game engine for designing training. This book is serious but fun. It has great graphics and an interesting take on what needs to be done to make a game fun. Think about making online learning fun as you read the book. If you have Flash skills and you want to develop games using Flash, this is the book for you. A little technical if you are new to Flash but good examples and techniques. Yes, it is a simple book with the basics covered but, if you want to get started exploring the development of Flash games for instruction and you only know a little bit of Flash, this is a good start. This book, as one reviewer said, "takes you from novice to beginner." If you have never worked with Flash to create animations, this is the book for you. A little about games, best used in conjunction with other game development books listed here.
This book is just a fun walk down "video game" memory lane. Buy it because it is glossy, easy to read and fun to have around. Screen captures of all your favorite video games from years gone by. The book is written as a comic but discusses the serious topic of the development and use of comic books as an art form. Good look at form following function.
Books I think are worth reading...but not necessarily related to the topics above...
Great book about corporate
corruption, a cautionary tale.It is the Enron story.
Great science fiction with insights into the gamer mindset. Great read if you have boys...scary as well. Describes why some high-tech companies are successful and some are not. Insights for internally marketing tech-based training. Describes why some innovative technology takes off in an organization and some doesn't. Research-based. Describes the concept of how mass distribution of books, songs, etc. serves as a new economic model. Innovative look at business books. Scattered but focused. Inspiring and fun to read. Peters at his best
I use this for my consulting...great for interviews and capturing digital voice data during needs assessments
Lastest Games and Gadgets Related to Games...Always Fun
